Obama: The Open Source President
In an interview with the BBC, Sun co-founder Scott McNealy revealed today that he has prepared a paper for the Obama administration on creating a more secure and cost-effective government through open source technologies. Michael Tiemann, president of the Open Source Initiative, supports the effort as an obvious cost-saving measure. His organization estimates that the global loss due to proprietary software is "in excess of $1 trillion a year." He said he was directing agencies that vet requests for information to err on the side of making information public _ not to look for reasons to legally withhold it _ an alteration to the traditional standard of evaluation."
